Somie and Jennifer have incorporated mindfulness into their own personal lives and into their health coaching practices for years. In their journey as health coaches, they discovered that many people had no idea how mindfulness could be implemented in their daily lives. Because let’s be real, who can go sit in a quiet room and “OM” for twenty minutes? NO? Not so much? That’s what we thought. And, to be honest, that’s really not what mindfulness is about anyway!
What they learned was anxiety and stress really aren’t things to fix, or even things to manage or cope with, they need to be embraced. Yes, embrace! And by following Jennifer and Somie on their journey as two moms who teach children, families, classrooms and individuals how to embrace the present moment, they will teach you that you too can live a fulfilling happy life, and even get to tuck those children in with out the tears and catch up on some of the things that makes mom happy. Even if it’s an episode of make believe.
Two moms walk into a coffee shop. No, this is not a dirty joke…
Both moms knew each other only by face, but fate steered them into an accidental conversation that changed their lives - forever! The two of them end up talking for hours about life as women who juggle families, jobs, volunteer responsibilities, school, and aging parents (not to mention puppies!), all the while struggling to find balance, especially with children that struggle with anxiety, perfectionism and tender hearts that can be quickly chewed up in an often unforgiving school setting.
Does this sound at all familiar? Your child goes to bed anxious about school - grades - tests - peers, or if the world is coming to an end. Or if the poor squirrels outside just might not survive the winter. Or you have a child who doesn’t say much of anything throughout the day but out of nowhere by bedtime needs to vent about “the worst day EVER.”
You try your best to stay calm and reassure them that everything will be okay, but yet, you yourself are anxious about your child’s grades, their peers, and possibly even the freezing squirrels...and don’t forget the long list of chores you haven’t even attempted because of all that you have on your plate…
All you want to do is tuck in your child (hoping for no more than twenty five questions and 3 glasses of water tonight) and curl up with a glass of wine, or a slice...who am I kidding, a tray of fudge brownies, hoping to catch up on some Games of Thrones episodes ( haven’t even reached Season 2 yet!)

Okay, back to the story…
…These two moms go on to find out just how relieved they were for being able to talk about these struggles – because so often they have feared the repercussions of judgement or gossip or no one really understanding what they are going through.
But as they continued to talk and laugh (and sometimes cry!) about the real struggles of life and parenting their anxious children, they began to see that, in their role as health coaches (even health coaches are not immune from the inevitable stress of life!!), they could reach other parents in similar situations with support, understanding and STRATEGIES for coping with all that life throws at us.
The strategies are multiple; they include everything from mindfulness to nutrition to movement (exercise) but nothing is prescriptive. We’ll never tell you what to eat or what not to eat or provide you with a one-size-fits all approach to exercise and stress management. But we will share ideas, offer recipes, suggest ways to develop a new relationship to exercise and nudge you toward enjoying life – as messy and chaotic as it is, most of the time.
We are two moms with different lifestyles and interests – neither of us does “cookie cutter” anything!

Prior to becoming a Holistic Nutritionist and Holistic Health Coach, Somie was a nursing major in college and worked in the medical field for over six years. She quickly discovered that even though she enjoyed the field, she needed a change. Luckily stumbling into massage school, she became a licensed Massage Therapist and Master Esthetician. For over twelve years she enjoyed this profession while starting her family.
Both children were eventually diagnosed with asthma by the age of one, which meant countless trips to the pediatrician and specialists for chronic pneumonia, bronchitis, ear infections, eczema and soon after, ADD, and anxiety. Even with surgeries and baskets of medications, relief was always just temporary. This led Somie to exhaustion, fear and even guilt...but with her medical background, she knew it could get much worse. She began searching for a better way to tackle her children’s health issues and regain control of their well-being.
Through her IIN training, she learned how to live a truly “holistic” life and, in the meantime, she was able to ditch the medications for real foods, natural remedies; most importantly, the fear abated and she and her family now live a happier and healthier life and both children are symptom free!
Jennifer came to health coaching while looking for ways to help her anxious son. While on this very personal journey, it became obvious that there are countless kids and parents who are also stressed and overwhelmed -- who need immediate and concrete techniques to manage every day anxiety. Mindfulness, movement and nutrition became essential tools in her tool box for herself and her family and, slowly, they have started to gain the upper-hand and move forward. While anxiety and stress are not removed from their lives, they now have a consistent approach for how to manage it.

Jennifer's coaching practice focuses on optimizing family wellness by helping parents and children manage challenges that may interfere with their overall health and well-being. Techniques to optimize family wellness include learning about mindfulness and deep breathing exercises and identifying family “flash points.” Jennifer is a Duke Integrative Medicine trained, nationally board certified integrative health coach. She is also a classically trained Pilates instructor and holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Virginia.
